Job Summary

The Speech Pathologist working within the community will be required to provide an efficient, high quality and comprehensive Speech Therapy service to children and adults in community settings such as their own homes, kindergartens, childcare, aged cares and schools. You will function as a member of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team and will work closely with team members to promote an integrated and holistic service.

Responsibilities

The Speech Pathologist will utilise their specialist knowledge and skills in communication and swallowing to work towards optimising the client’s health, wellbeing, and participation.

Person Specification

Qualifications/registrations/licences

  • Completion of an accredited Australian entry level speech pathology qualification or successful completion of an Overseas Qualification Assessment with Speech Pathology Australia in the last two years
  • Be eligible for membership as a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) with Speech Pathology Australia
  • NDIS Worker Screening clearance

Technical skills/knowledge/experience

  • Demonstrate specialised knowledge and skills in communication and swallowing across the lifespan
  • Work in collaboration with educators and families to create an environment for kindergarten aged children that promotes improved speech, language, communication, social interaction, and early literacy outcomes.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify the most appropriate assessment and treatment in children with mild to moderate speech and language delay in children aged 3+
  • Demonstrate an understanding of paediatric feeding for children 0-5 years of age as well as appropriate assessment and treatment methods.
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide support in trailing and implementing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
  • Demonstrate understanding of safe swallow guidelines, assessment, and management strategies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify the most appropriate assessment and treatment in adults with aphasia, dysarthria and other communication disorders.
  • A well-developed understanding of and ability to navigate complex service systems such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
  • Provide appointment-based phone, email, and Teams/telehealth support to educators and families as required.
  • Demonstrate well-developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to engage in reflective practice to support specialist clinical care delivery.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver safe client-focused care, providing specialist knowledge.
  • Demonstrate initiative in leading quality improvement or research projects.
  • Demonstrate an ability to develop and deliver specialist clinical area professional development and education.
  • Demonstrate a well-developed skillset in organisation, time management, planning, and priority setting.
  • Demonstrate innovative approaches to problem solving for individual clients and/or service delivery using specialist skill or knowledge.
  • Demonstrate the ability to establish appropriate goals catered toward the client’s communication and swallowing needs.

  • Current and satisfactory Police Check (must also comply with Aged Care Act 1997 Accountability Amendment Principles 2012 if working in Aged Care setting)
  • Current SPA Registration
  • Current and satisfactory Working with Children Check
  • Current Drivers Licence
